  • Save the Ocean Through Art

    I’m usually stuffing my face with turkey and mashed potatoes, then watching football while I lie on the couch in a food coma during Thanksgiving, but this year I had the pleasure of experiencing a bit of Portuguese culture over the extended break. And what an interesting and thought-provoking culture it is! The city of Lisbon is riddled with artists and storytellers, all sharing the tragic memories of their past and warning of future catastrophes we can all see slowly occurring right before our eyes. A cry to save the ocean was loud and clear at the Museum of Art, Architecture, & Technology (MAAT).

    As attendees to MAAT enter the breathtaking, futuristic building, the installation that immediately grabs their undivided attention is titled “Over Flow,” a work created by Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata.

    Most spectators’ initial thought is undoubtedly “Why is there a pile of garbage in the art museum?” But as those onlookers continue to gaze upon the installation, they start to recognize its intricate placement and repetitive nuances. Rounding the corner, down the ramp, beneath the net of garbage, the shadows create an underwater-like environment; sunken boats rest on the lower level, below a net of rubbish and unacceptable truth. One immediately realizes the powerful message behind the work.

    Kawamata worked in collaboration for over a year with a large network of local organizations and volunteers, gathering trash from around the beaches of Lisbon and assembling the piece of art square by square in a strategically thought-out pattern, to help create this awe-inspiring, truly immersive installation.

    “Over Flow” raises awareness to an ongoing problem, which could result in catastrophe. The only thing I could think while standing engulfed in the artist-created seascape of garbage was “We can do better; we have to do better.” I think Kawamata accomplished his mission.

  • Relating To Retailers 2018

    Throughout 2018, GreenEarth has seen its most successful year to date, when it comes to building relationships with garment retailers and manufacturers.

    There have been more labels with with our logo than ever before, but we are now starting to see our branding and messaging appear on instore leaflets, hang tags, websites and packaging. And not only is GreenEarth being adopted by more brands, they are positioning OUR logo on more product within their ranges.

    The key to achieving this is continued engagement with Retailer and Manufacturers.

    So far this year, there have been 21 Technical Visits to Johnson Cleaners Specialist Centre in Rugby, U.K. In addition, we have hosted a Technical visit at Jeeves of Belgravia in London, 3 webinars and held our own event in London.

    There have been 130 delegates on the Technical Visits to Rugby, across 25 companies – These include high end retailers through to online fast fashion.

    There have been 10 approved care labels in 2018 so far, 7 of which are from brand new recommending retailers.  The same label is often used in many products for the same brand, just changing the style code. So, the consumer is becoming more aware of our brand.

    This is something GreenEarth aims to build on in 2019 because GreenEarth IS what all the best labels are wearing!

    Due to an overwhelming outpouring of families in need of coats and winter items at the Colvin Cleaners warehouse last year, the company has moved this Saturday’s first free distribution to the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1530 Kenmore Ave., between Elmwood and Delaware Avenues in North Buffalo. It will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. One coat per person will be distributed. If children are not with adults, adult needs the children’s id numbers.
    The 23rd annual “Coats 4 Kids” program, supported by The Allstate Foundation and Fidelis Care, began its collection of winter items on Oct. 1. Donations can be made at Colvin Cleaners: 2375 Elmwood Ave., Kenmore; Allstate Insurance agencies; and Fidelis Care.     A record 6,077 coats were donated to “Coats 4 Kids” at its live drive with WIVB-TV last week.
    “From the phone calls our team at Colvin Cleaners has been receiving this month, we are planning for many families in need to attend our distribution on Saturday. The Knights of Columbus hall gives us much more room to display the coats by size and tables with the hats, gloves and scarves,” said Paul A. Billoni, president and CEO of the family-owned Colvin Cleaners. “Our goal at each of the distributions is to make the families and children feel as welcome as possible and to give them enough room and time to select that perfect coat to keep them warm this summer.”
    With the support of The Allstate Foundation and Fidelis Care, there are now more than 50 donation locations throughout Western New York, making it convenient for everyone to go through their closets and donate gently used or new winter coats, jackets, gloves, hats and scarves for toddlers to young adults for families in need this winter season.
    “Every year our goal remains the same: The ability to provide coats to all families who otherwise could not afford them. We all know how cold it gets here in WNY, so we need to make sure everyone can stay warm,” Billoni added.
    Over the past 23 years, Colvin Cleaners has collected, cleaned, sorted and distributed, for free, more than 80,000 coats to children in need throughout Western New York. Last year, a record 13,350 coats were distributed.
    Billoni said he continues to see the need increasing.
    “I am confident our generous neighbors throughout WNY will come through again for this much-needed drive,” he said. “For us, it is all worthwhile when families come in and go through the racks of coats or pick out a pair of gloves that will keep them warm this winter. When they smile or say ‘Thank you,’ it puts tears in your eyes.”

  • GreenEarth Affiliates Keep the Environment as Spiffy as the Clothes.

    At Vapor Sudden Service Cleaners, a change in focus helps keep the environment as spiffy as the clothes.

    Duke Quinones, owner of Vapor Sudden Service Cleaners in Monterey, has been in the laundering business his whole life. He bought the business from his father 45 years ago – Quinones was 32 at the time – and has seen the industry continue to evolve.

    “Over 90 percent of clothes purchased in the United States are made overseas now,” Quinones says.

    The challenge with that, he says, is that the fabrics are often not tested for dye loss or shrinkage.

    That means cleaners have to figure out those variables for themselves, and that often means having to do spot tests for dye loss so they don’t ruin a garment.

    “The downside of the industry is that it’s become tough,” he says. “I have a table that every day we put questionable garments on.”

    An upside, though, is the development of environmentally friendly dry cleaning solvents, and in that, Quinones was a pioneer: About 18 years ago, when he moved the business from its old Del Monte Avenue spot to its current location on 10th Street near the Naval Postgraduate School, Quinones took a leap.

    He decided to invest in a GreenEarth dry cleaning system – which utilizes liquid silicone (in essence, liquid sand) – that at the time was a brand new technology.

    “When we went to GreenEarth, we were 10th in the world to start using it, and we were only the one in the state of California at that time,” Quinones says. “It was a big risk – it wasn’t proven yet.”

    Watching the operation at Vapor on a recent afternoon, the cleaning area is abuzz with employees using machines to press shirts, pants and when requested, adding creases. Garments move through processes with seamless efficiency.

    Whenever there is a questionable garment – one where it’s unclear how it should be treated – it’s put on a table for Quinones to inspect it.

    Quinones, who runs the business with his wife, Patt, and son, Greg, says part of his business’ success can be attributed to the experience of their employees, some of whom have been there for 25 years.

    “Most of the employees here are really good at what they do,” Quinones says. “It’s about treating people like you want to be treated. Customers, and employees, too.”

    Quinones, who is now 76, says it’s likely his son will one day take over the business, but he has no plans to retire anytime soon.

    “It’s a purpose,” he says. “For me, it’s not work anymore. It’s in my blood, and I enjoy making customers happy, and I enjoy challenges.”

    HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Calling itself the “friendly garment cleaning franchise founded on the ‘We Care’ philosophy,” OXXO Care Cleaners has bloomed in the Orlando, Fla., area with three recent franchise store locations popping up, and a fourth on the way, it reports.

    The franchise writes that, “Orlando customers love the unique combination of services offered — 24/7 ATM pickup/drop off, boutique-style setting, mobile payment app, use of GreenEarth® Cleaning, and on-premises hand ironing,” it notes.

    The company’s Orlando-area expansion comes amid the metro area’s booming growth and popularity, the company says. For the last four years, it relates, the area has undergone a profound economic transformation, from its airport expansion to the luxury residential boom downtown.

    “We are confident that the personalized service and experience offered at our Orlando locations will continue to drive loyalty for our brand throughout the region,” notes Salomon Mishaan, CEO.

    Guillermo Gallegos, owner of the firm’s Clermont store location, near Orlando, brings business experience from the manufacturing and industrial sectors. He most recently owned a Home Depot-style store in Venezuela. His store serves the city’s northwest region.

    “I fell in love with OXXO’s innovation as soon as I moved to Florida,” says Gallegos. “I actually became OXXO’s representative for all of Central and Northern Florida and am proud to own the Clermont store today.”

    Also, the franchise will expand again, it notes, at the end of this year with the planned opening of another store, this time in Winter Park, another nearby suburb, to be run by franchisee Reny Balsa.

    “Balsa, a food industry professional from Venezuela, knows how to cater to consumers who need fast, friendly, and convenient service,” the firm says, adding that, “In Venezuela, Reny’s family owns the food company that services Grupo Polar’s cafeterias.”

    “When I decided to come to the U.S.,” relates Balsa, “I identified Orlando as the perfect city in which to live and own a business, because it truly reflects the ‘American Dream’ – from Disney, where all dreams come trueto the city’s fast-growing STEM sector, which means Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.”

  • GreenEarth Affiliate Doing It Right in Maine

    Not just cleaning clothes, creating fun environment

    CHICAGO — If you live in Maine, you might be a customer of Pratt Abbott Garment Care, the state’s largest provider of drycleaning, vended laundry and linen/uniform rental services.

    “One of the reasons we have all three business sectors is to provide volume to afford a management infrastructure which allows our employees growth opportunities,” says David Machesney, who, along with his father Jim, purchased the company in 1991.

    The other, he maintains, is because providing “everything clean” simplifies life for customers.

    The firm umbrellas 12 drycleaning facilities, eight vended laundries, and a 50,000-square-foot linen and uniform rental plant. By design, multiple revenue streams feed the Pratt Abbott enterprise.

    “Co-mingling,” he adds, “also allows us to run fully attended laundries and offset some of the labor cost from drycleaning revenue.”

    Thus, the vended laundries tend to make the drycleaning stores more profitable, and vice versa. Even better? The pairing creates “one-stop-shop” customer convenience. That’s important, according to Machesney, because Pratt Abbott “is in the business of selling time.”

    Uniform and linen rental, the most profitable of the firm’s business sectors, began in the 1970s, but only recently ballooned into super-performer status.

    Making up a robust 58% of total company revenue, the uniform and linen service provides pickup and delivery of cleaned and leased garments and linens. During the last 12 months, it has realized double-digit growth, according to Machesney. Thanks to the new plant’s size and equipment mix, he expects that growth rate to continue for the next two to five years.

    Committed to improvement, Machesney ensures his drycleaning locations, plants, and vended laundries operate at peak performance. He reinvests for big returns.

    “We continuously improve all our processes to provide innovative services that increase satisfaction, quality and value for our customers, and create profitable growth for our company,” he says.

    During the last decade, for example, he’s renovated several vended laundries, which resulted in a per-store revenue bump of 10-30% and utility cost savings of 50%. “We like to diversify our assets and control our destiny,” he notes, “so in addition to having the three different segments of garment care industry, we invest in commercial real estate to control our locations and further diversify our assets.

    “We absolutely want to continue to grow and solidify our market,” Machesney says. “If you can do something you like and be profitable along the way, that’s the ticket.”

    Machesney is ever on the hunt for new opportunities. His most recent development is new Express Laundry Centers in North Windham and Yarmouth, Maine.


    It’s a journey, according to Machesney. “I didn’t look to get into the business to clean clothes. I wanted to run a business and I knew we needed enough size and infrastructure to do it right. I have 160 employees and five direct reports, and we try to make it a fun environment.”

    Grateful for the company’s success, Machesney and his team make a point to give back. “We are active volunteers of Junior Achievement,” he points out.

    Additionally, Pratt Abbott cleans 40,000 Coats for Kids each year and supports Camp Susan Curtis summer camp for underprivileged kids. “These kids are in tough situations and summer camp gives them a chance to breathe and plan for their future,” says Machesney. “It helps them break the cycle of poverty.”

    The New Owners Of Bloomsburg Dry Cleaner Make Going Greener A Priority

    The new owners of a Bloomsburg dry cleaner have chosen to change the previous direction of Lapels Dry Cleaning and are making it more environmentally friendly by using a material like sand to clean clothes, rather than chemicals.

    A pair of Berwick lawyers, Travis Petty and Nick Lutz, along with friends Angelo and Denise Venditti, purchased Lapels Dry Cleaning back in June. Petty said it was a fairly easy call to switch from chemicals to liquid silicone saying “we view it as not only as an investment in the community, but also in the Earth. If we don’t look at these sustainability issues now, we’re going to have a lot of problems.”

    In September, officials with Green Earth Cleaning were at the store on Route 11 by, Dunkin Donuts, changing over the cleaning system to the greener option.

    Green Earth Cleaning’s technical sales representative said the new liquid silicone cleaner lifts stains, oil and dirt from clothing, without using chemicals. One traditional dry-cleaning chemical, tetrachloroethylene, is considered a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

    With the new system, what’s left after the dry cleaning process is a putty-like clay or dirt that can be safely deposited back into the soil.

    David Grippi, vice president of operations for Lapels, said his newer locations all use the Green Earth process, and other locations are being encouraged to switch over. “I know one of our locations that used it as pond soil, and another planted a tree in it,” he said of the clay leftovers.

    Petty said Lapels now has a staff of seven that’s overseen by manager Megan Kiliti.

    Lapels Dry Cleaning is hoping to add staff as the business grows and possibly expand into other markets, according to Petty.
